The instructions and the Canon video I viewed made this look like a super easy install which it should be. Following the instructions to the letter, the orginal screen didn’t want to drop down in the holder. Once I got it out, using the supplied tool, the new screen didn’t want to seat as shown in the video so the holder wouldn’t latch up. I tried seating the screen several times more and got it to latch in place. To my amazement, despite being in a factory sealed container, I have a smudgy looking streak to the left of center of the screen. I will need to pull it out and see if it can be cleaned or if it’s a defective screen. Since I bought it from a local shop, I may have them look at it.

I do need this screen to help me keep my images horizontal as my varilux eyeglasses have given me problems in the past.

Just replaced it, it was such an easy replacement (less than 30 seconds) that I found myself going back couple times to make sure I did it right and everything is secured. Not only this should be standard on the camera, they should make it that you can turn the grid on and off (meaning grid is not on the focus screen but electronic like the grid on Live View). The only thing seems negative is that there is a little glare under strong sunlight condition, may be I should clean it with water? It would get 5 stars if the cost is under $15.00. Get real Canon, for a $1000.00 camera you cannot supply that as a free option with the package?

BTW, if you intend to switch back and forth, you need a rocket blower or something like that, dust just loves that screen.

It was easy to install this into my new 50D just by following the included directions and using a little care. I tried to be forceful enough to get it to “snap” into place, while not hitting something important inadvertently, and it only took me two attempts.

The viewfinder is only SLIGHTLY darker with this screen. The difference is almost imperceptible unless you look at the same object before removing the standard screen – in the same lighting – and then repeat when you install this screen.

The lines on the screen are subtle enough that they are not bothersome, and they serve the purposes of helping you square up to the horizon line (or other reference points) quite well. Although the lines do not break the screen up into “perfect thirds” (just as some other reviewers mentioned), they do give you a bit of a reference for how the image may look if it is cropped to a ratio other than the standard 2:3 (e.g. 8×10″)

I haven’t done test shots to determine how close the lines are to showing the “inch” that is cropped off on either side when creating an 8×10″, but with a little bit of time one could easily use it to serve as a reference point for that purpose. (This is nice when I’m looking to frame a portrait correctly, while leaving enough room for potential crops. It serves as a good reminder)

I deducted one star for installation – but again – it wasn’t enough of a problem to warrant to much worry. If you’re looking to be more aware of your framing, and want to be sure that your pictures are perpendicular to the horizon – this is well worth the investment.

I have used these grid screens for some time now and am pleased with the aid they are to composition.

Having guide lines in your viewfinder really helps composing your shots, especially when you have horizontal or vertical aspects in your shot that you want to keep straight.

Installation is quick with the provided tool. Just undo the clip that holds the original screen, take that out and replace it with the new one and close it up. Set the correct screen in your cameras menu and you’re done.

    A must for every owner!
